Mahwah residents are preparing to participate in a town-wide waste-reduction initiative as the municipality holds its designated Curb Alert Day on Sunday, October 25, 2026. The program invites homeowners across the township to place clean, functional, and unwanted household items at the edge of their driveways or curbs for neighbors and community members to pick up free of charge.
The initiative aims to extend the lifecycle of usable household goods while fostering a neighborhood-level culture of sustainability. Residents participating in the event are encouraged to set out items early in the morning, ensuring all goods are clearly marked or separated from regular trash containers. Acceptable items generally include solid wood furniture, kitchenware, garden tools, small appliances in working order, and decorative home accessories.
From a municipal infrastructure perspective, community reuse days help reduce the total volume of bulk waste managed by the Mahwah Department of Public Works during scheduled collection cycles. Reducing heavy household refuse in municipal waste streams lowers landfill transfer fees and helps the township meet county-wide recycling and waste diversion benchmarks set by the Bergen County Utilities Authority.
Township guidelines remind property owners that any items remaining unclaimed at the end of the day must be promptly removed from the curb to comply with local property maintenance ordinances. Hazardous materials, mattresses, un-sanitized upholstered items, and broken electronics should not be placed on the curb during the event.
